Pitfall of Comparisons

Have you heard the expression, “Keeping up with the Joneses”? This concept originally communicated

the problems caused by greed, envy, and competition to name a few unsavory human traits.

I have a new reason to say it to you because “Keeping up with the Joneses” derails innovation!

As a human, you crave to be seen and heard as a unique individual. But you cannot let your special light

shine out when you try to be like someone else or compare yourself to another person.

In fact, I believe making comparisons is a major contributor of most wars and conflicts.

What does this mean for us? We are starting a new club and one the worst falsehoods we can embrace

is for someone to proclaiming, “This is how it is supposed to be.” Expressing that means that we are

comparing ourselves to an existing club and thus shutting down the opportunity to be innovative club.

We have an opportunity to create something that does not already exist as well as to refresh what it

means to be a thriving Rotary club. I encourage all of us to be open to new ideas and concepts. By

ignoring preconceived ideas, who knows the great things we can accomplish?

Let us NOT keep up with the Joneses!
